Gloucester
On Saturday, February 4 at 5:00pm, director Zach Levy visits with his film, "Strongman," a cinema verité documentary about Stanless Steel, the self-proclaimed 'Strongest Man in the World at Bending Steel and Metal.' Told with the kind of intimacy that can only be achieved with years of filming, the film follows the dreams and heartbreaking humanity of Stanless Steel — the only man alive who can bend a penny with his fingers — as he struggles to gain control of a world that seems constantly out of his grasp. Roger Ebert proclaimed it one of the best films of the year.

On Sunday, February 5 across the street at The Annie at 1 Washington Street, Levy will conduct a "Documentary 101" workshop, an intensive, 6-hour instruction in all aspects of non-fiction filmmaking, including selecting a subject and storytelling style, basic interviewing technique and ways to get your finished film seen. Travelling Light
Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The story begins in a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900. The young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.Cast members include Abigail McKern (“Rumpole of the Bailey” and “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby” and Antony Sher (“Shakespeare in Love” “Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown.”)

Danilo Perez to the Shalin Liu
Danilo Pérez is a pianist of enormous talent. Infusing notes with vivid dynamics and expression, he does not play as much as caress the notes of the piano, bringing lively characters and entire stories to life. As a composer, he hears music with a wide spectrum of tonalities and rhythms. Join us in welcoming one of the most dynamic and influential musicians of our time, two time Grammy® Award-winning pianist Danilo Pérez and friends.
Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. In just over a decade, his distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences.
Currently, Pérez serves as Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival, Artistic Advisor of the innovative Mellon Jazz Up Close series at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, and Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. He also continues to play with Ben Street and Adam Cruz, musicians that have been working with him for more than eight years. His new CD, Providencia, was released last summer on Mack Avenue Records.
This concert at the extraordinary Shalin Liu Performance Center, benefits the North Shore Jazz Project, a not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion, appreciation and education of Jazz music on the North Shore. The proceeds from this event provide ongoing support for music education programs throughout the North Shore.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to not only see a truly inspirational musician, But our own North Shore Jazz Project All-Stars, will be performing two Charles Mingus songs to kick off the evening.
The All Stars were selected from among several North Shore High School jazz bands. This is a great opportunity for them to share the stage with a leading figure in jazz today, and for our audience to see the type of work the North Shore Jazz Project does. This concert is to benefit the North Shore Jazz Project. The proceeds from this event provide ongoing support for music education programs throughout the North Shore.

Gloucester
Join NOAA maritime archaeologists, Deborah Marx and Matthew Lawrence for a tour of the Stellwagen Bank National Maritime Sanctuary's historic shipwrecks. Seating is general admission and on a first-come, first-served basis.Support for the residency and concert by A Far Cry has been received from the Summer Star Foundation for Nature, Art and Humanity. Support for Rockport Music Education and Outreach programs for 2011-12 has been received from the National Endowment for the Arts. From the artist's website:Founded in 2007 by 17 young musicians bent on making music according to their own rules, the groundbreaking, self-conducted string orchestra A Far Cry has enjoyed a heady ascent toward the highest ranks of today’s new generation of classical ensembles. Hailed by the Boston Globe as “thrilling,” “intrepid” and “brilliant,” A Far Cry explores the traditional boundaries of classical music, experimenting with the ways it is prepared, performed, and experienced.Recently appointed Chamber Orchestra in Residence at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the ensemble has developed an innovative structure of rotating leadership, both on stage and behind the scenes, which empowers each musician and aims to distill a valuable diversity of opinion into one unified voice.Along with its busy touring schedule across the USA, A Far Cry maintains an educational partnership with the New England Conservatory and continues to foster ties to a growing community with a storefront rehearsal space and neighborhood concert series in Boston—infusing each venture with, in the Globe’s words, “high musical standards and unbridled idealism.”
