Rockport Music presents PETER YARROW of Peter, Paul, & Mary
Peter's talents as a creative artist, both with Peter, Paul & Mary and as a solo performer, are frequently directed at using music to convey a message of humanity and caring. His gift for songwriting has produced some of the most moving songs Peter, Paul & Mary have recorded, including "Puff, the Magic Dragon", "Day is Done", "Light One Candle", and "The Great Mandala". As a member of the renowned musical trio, he has earned many gold and platinum albums, has been awarded numerous Grammys, and nominated for several more. More important to Peter, however, is the acknowledgment of the central role that he and his partners have played in bringing the folk renaissance of the 1960s to the hearts and homes of the American public.

Raul Midón
Vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Raul Midón is a soulful tenor with a dazzling percussive guitar style. His syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused approach creates bass, harmony, and melodic lines that emanate from the fretboard in one slap-happy storm. He also loves to get the crowd going with improvised bebop “trumpet” solos performed entirely with his mouth. Once a sought-after Latin-pop backup singer who worked with such artists as Julio and Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin, Midón’s solo career has garnered rave New York Times reviews for his Carnegie Hall performance and regular gigs on Leno’s Tonight Show. His third album is entitled “Synthesis.”

Mother's Night Out
Fuller School Auditorium
Gloucester
Mother’s Night Out
Saturday, May 12, 2012, 8pm
Mother’s Night Out is on Saturday, May 12th at 8 PM. First on the program is Rossini’s overture to his seldom-performed tragic opera Semiramide. The Semiramide Overture, however, has been widely performed and recorded and is beloved for its dramatic contrasts, high energy, charming melodies and orchestral virtuosity. Elita Kang, Assistant Concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will then play a brilliant Violin Concerto by Max Bruch, a German Romantic classicist composer, conductor and teacher of the generation following Brahms.
The program ends with the Brahms Symphony No. 4, one of the pinnacles of the Romantic musical tradition. The “classical” aspect of Brahms’ work is a grounding in counterpoint and the formal organization of the Baroque and Classical idioms — his cultural legacy. Brahms transformed these elements with his explorations into the lush harmonies and soaring melodies of the Romantic era. The Symphony No. 4 is one of the most beloved orchestral compositions of the late 19th century.
Elita Kang, violin
Elita Kang joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the start of the 1997-98 season. In February 2001, she was appointed assistant concertmaster. Ms. Kang twice won the Juilliard Concerto Competition and in 1992 won the Grand Prize in the America String Teachers. |

Parkington Sisters
Raised in a wildly musical household in Welfleet, Mass., the Parkington Sisters create an aural experience that is both magnetic in its delivery and genuine in its emotional impact. Rose, Nora, Sarah, and Ariel Parkington are classically-trained multi-instrumentalists who have combined their talents in composition and songwriting. Indie-folk with a classical twist, their music is embodied by vibrant string arrangements combined with tight, interwoven four-part vocal harmonies and gorgeous, blending voices. Ambitious and intricate, the Parkington Sisters produce an undeniable expression of sisterhood. Following a successful year -- with performances at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, an extensive tour with the Dropkick Murphys, including a sold-out Fenway show, and opening for Mavis Staples at Boston’s Symphony Hall -- this marks the Sisters’ debut performance in Rockport.

Motif No.1 Day
Downtown Rockport
Rockport
Motif No.1 Day began in 1949 as an opportunity for Rockport residents and visitors to come together to celebrate Rockport's heritage of the arts, symbolized by our famous red fishing shack, Motif No.1, the subject of countless paintings during the early 20th century.
Today, Rockport continues to inspire artists working across several media. Rockport honors this iconic building with a day dedicated to the Arts, expressed in family-focused, interactive ways.
A highlight of the festival is the Sidewalk Chalk Art contest, creating art spontaneously on the sidewalks of Rockport. The festival also offers an opportunity for budding and practicing artists alike to draw and paint the Motif through the Try Your Hand Art Event, with easels set up at different vantage points throughout downtown. Art activities for children, a scavenger hunt (finding temporary, small-scale sculptures of the Motif), poetry readings, film, art exhibits, dramatic presentations and fantastic live music will all be featured for a festival that encompasses nearly every artistic medium.
This is a unique celebration of a unique coastal town, with Rockport's business and cultural community joining in the fun through each organization's own activities and events in conjunction with the festival.
Motif No. 1 Day takes place from 10 am to 6 pm on May 21, 2011. A full schedule of events is now available online at sites.google.com. And for more information about Motif No. 1, check out historian and photographer Les Bartlett's website www.motif1.net. |
